  • Actually Watching

Okay, first of all, I didn’t disappear.

I need to correct that because every time somebody comes back to music after a while, the story becomes, “I stepped away from social media.”

    I did not.

I was on YouTube. I was on Instagram. I was definitely on Facebook. I was around, probably saying something I had no business saying.

I just moved away from music.

And honestly, I don’t even know if I consciously decided to do that. Life happened. My interests changed. I changed. Music went from being this huge part of my identity online to something sitting quietly in the background.

    Then TikTok happened.

And TikTok reminded me how much I actually love the internet when I’m allowed to be a little messy.

    Not everything needs beautiful lighting.

    Not everything needs an announcement.

Not everything needs to make sense with whatever you posted yesterday.

Sometimes I want to talk about something completely random. Sometimes I want to make something stupid. Sometimes I want to overshare a little bit. Sometimes I want to post something and then five minutes later think, well… that’s on the internet now.

    And not apologize for it.

That freedom actually reignited something in me.

Somewhere between making short-form content, being ridiculous, talking to people, experimenting again and generally not taking myself so damn seriously, I started feeling that old creative itch.

And then my day-ones did something that still kind of blows my mind.

They got me a new computer so I could create again.

    A freaking MacBook Pro.

And let me tell you something: this MacBook is a BEAST.

I’m sitting here with this ridiculously powerful machine in front of me thinking, okay… y’all really did this. Now I actually have to make something.

    No pressure.

So that’s kind of where I am.

    I’m making music again.

    I’m digging through old work.

I’m learning new things. I’m messing with production. I’m writing. I’m experimenting. I’m looking at things I made years ago with completely different eyes and occasionally asking my younger self some very serious questions.

And I’m doing a lot of it while you’re watching.

That’s the part that’s new for me.

I don’t want to disappear for two years and come back with twelve perfect photographs, an album cover and some carefully written statement about my “artistic evolution.”

    Please.

I want you to see some of the shit show.

I want to share things while I’m excited about them, not six months later when they’re part of a marketing schedule.

    Maybe something works.

    Maybe it sucks.

Maybe I love it tonight and hate it tomorrow.

Maybe I post an old song and tell you exactly what I think about it now.

Maybe I make something completely unexpected.

    I don’t know.

    That’s kind of the point.

And to the people who have been around since the beginning — my actual day-ones — I hope you know how much I appreciate you. The fact that after all these years some of you are still here, still rooting for me, and literally helping give me the tools to create again is wild to me.

    So yeah.

    The music is coming back.

    I’m coming back to it.

But I’m not interested in pretending I have some perfectly orchestrated master plan for how this is supposed to happen.

You’re actually watching me figure it out.

    Mess and all.

And I think that’s going to be a lot more fun.

  • In the Studio Right Now

People keep asking when new music is coming. Here’s the honest answer: I’m in it right now.

Not “in the studio” like a press release. I mean actually in it — headphones on too long, humming the same four bars until they stop sounding like words, deleting a vocal take at 1am because it was technically fine and emotionally nothing.

Can’t Wait Until Dark happened a long time ago, under a different name, in a different life. I already know how to make a record. What I’m relearning is how to make one as the person I am now, instead of the person I spent years pretending not to be.

Some days that’s easy. Some days it’s just me and a blinking cursor and a song that refuses to finish itself.

No dates yet. No big announcement. Just this: I’m working. It’s real. It’s happening slower than I’d like and faster than it feels some nights.

I’ll tell you when there’s something to hear.

  • In My Social Media Divine Era

Who said your 40s are when you slow down? I didn’t get that memo.

If anything, I feel like I’ve gotten more curious. And probably a little more ridiculous.

I was thinking about social media the other day and how different it feels to me now. There was a time when I thought way too much about what I posted. Is this good? Does this make sense? Does anybody care? Should I delete it? Why did only twelve people like this? You know, completely normal and healthy behavior.

    Now?

    Girl, post it.

I think getting older has made me realize how much time we waste trying to look like we have everything figured out.

    We don’t.

    I certainly don’t.

And I don’t really want to anymore.

That’s probably my favorite thing about being in my 40s. I’m much more comfortable saying I like something simply because I like it. I can change my mind. I can try something and be terrible at it. I can post something stupid because it made me laugh. I can talk about music one day and something completely unrelated the next.

There doesn’t have to be a strategy behind every damn thing.

And weirdly, I’ve become more creative because of it.

I want to make music again. I want to write. I want to make videos. I want to dig up old things I made and talk about them. I want to try ideas that may go absolutely nowhere.

I also don’t need everything to be finished before I let somebody see it anymore.

That’s a big one for me.

For a long time I thought you were supposed to disappear, work on something privately, make it perfect, and then come back and present the finished version.

    I’m bored with that.

I’d rather let you see some of the process. The good stuff, the questionable stuff, and the occasional what the hell was I thinking?

    Maybe that’s my divine era.

Not because I’ve suddenly reached enlightenment.

    Please.

I still lose my phone while I’m holding it.

I just care a lot less about looking like I have everything figured out.

And at this age, that feels pretty damn divine to me.
